Sant’Efisio is one of the most iconic and evocative events in Sardinia—an annual celebration that transforms Cagliari into an open-air stage filled with devotion, color, and ancient traditions.
The 2026 edition, the 370th, will take place from April 25 to May 4, with the heart of the celebration between May 1 and May 4.
It is one of the longest religious processions in Europe: a pilgrimage that accompanies the statue of the saint from Cagliari to Nora, the place of his martyrdom, and back.
The most anticipated moment is May 1, when the saint leaves the Church of Stampace and crosses the historic center of Cagliari in an extraordinary procession.
Leading the parade are the tracas, decorated carts, followed by thousands of participants in traditional costumes from all over Sardinia, along with horsemen, militiamen, and confraternities.
The golden carriage of Sant’Efisio, pulled by oxen, marks the beginning of the pilgrimage towards the south of the island, accompanied by songs, the sound of launeddas, and a uniquely heartfelt popular participation.
From May 1 to May 3, the simulacrum travels through the island’s historic stops.
Here, religious celebrations and moments of deep spiritual intensity take place, culminating in the solemn procession on May 3 in the archaeological area of Nora.
On May 4, at sunset, the saint returns to Cagliari among crowds filled with emotion, arriving back at the Church of Stampace, where the vow is fulfilled with the traditional greeting: “Atrus annus”.
Beyond the procession, the city comes alive with days of celebration featuring cultural events and exhibitions, concerts and performances, as well as food, wine, and artisan initiatives.
Born from a solemn vow made in 1652 to thank the saint for deliverance from the plague, the Feast of Sant’Efisio is today much more than a religious celebration: it is a collective moment that unites the entire island through history, faith, and tradition.
Taking part means experiencing something truly authentic, immersed in the deepest soul of Sardinia.
